MEET THE BREWCYCLING TEAM

The San Diego Brewcycling Collaborative was founded by a group of concerned San Diego citizens who believe in change and progress in benefit of our planet.

  • Natalia King Quick (she/her) - President & Co-Founder

    Natalia (she/her) is a Recycling Specialist at the County of San Diego, where she works to ensure that commercial & multifamily properties are not only properly recycling but also have the tools they need to do so. Prior to her current position she was the Recycling Programs Manager at I Love A Clean San Diego. Natalia holds a B.S. in Ecology, Animal Behavior, and Evolution from the UC San Diego, as recently completed a Certification in Sustainable Resource Management. During her time at UCSD she was part of the inaugural class of UCSD Sustainability Ambassadors, worked as a RA, and was a founding member of the Village Edible Garden (VEG) & Sierra Club at UCSD. Her main goal in life is to help bring together more sustainable and equitable local & global communities through education, outreach, and collaboration.

    When not working she can be found spending time in her Santee garden with her husband & kitties, playing Dungeons & Dragons, enjoying a glass of cabernet sauvignon (or a local beer), or otherwise spending time with those she loves!

  • Fiorella Rossel Borkert (she/her) - Secretary, Community Outreach Director & Co-Founder

    Fio is a Creative Upcycler, Product Designer, and Production & Product Development Specialist driven by a passion for raising awareness about plastic waste through innovative outlets, particularly in the realm of fashion. An ardent craft beverage enthusiast, she finds joy in good eats, music, and travel. Fio holds a degree in Apparel Industry Management from FIDM in Los Angeles.

    As the co-founder and designer of The Bountiful Bag Upcycling Company, Fio focuses on upcycling plastic waste from diverse industries, including craft beverage, entertainment, fashion, and furniture. Additionally, she serves as a Founding Member on the Board of Directors for the Sustainability is Sexy nonprofit organization. Fio thrives on bringing businesses and communities together, fostering education, and creating awareness about plastic crises, food waste, and labor laws with a compassionate approach.

    Working on the inception and development of Brewcycling has been a manifested goal for Fio, and she is thrilled to be part of a movement dedicated to "saving the world one malt bag at a time!"

  • Romi Rossel (she/her) - VP, Treasurer, Marketing Director & Co-Founder

    Romi is a versatile professional seamlessly blending her creative expertise as a Photographer, Digital Artist and Marketing Specialist with a robust background in Finance, Customer Relations, and Operations. As the Co-Founder and Marketing Director of The Bountiful Bag Upcycling Company, she has dedicated over five years to actively addressing plastic waste within the craft beverage sector. Since 2014, Romi has been a dynamic member of the brewing and distilling industries, infusing both experience and passion into her pursuits.

    Currently, she serves as the Chapter Co-Lead of Pink Boots Society San Diego, an international nonprofit dedicated to advancing women in the fermentation world.

    Beyond her professional commitments, Romi leverages her artistic talents to make sustainability accessible and enjoyable for all, inspiring individuals to join the collective effort in saving the world.

  • Luke Suttemiller (he/him) - BrewSCRAP Program Operations Director & Co-Founder

    Luke has spent 5+ years working in the Alcohol/Beverage industry. He started in marketing working for Vita Coco and then switched over to the alcohol side once he moved to San Diego. He received my training in cellar operations/brewing from Alesmith, Stone, and Coronado before being recruited over to JuneShine. Luke’s ultimate goal is to do consulting in the industry due to his vision and credibility on sustainability, efficiencies, and culture.

    Beyond brewing, he also operates as President for a Non-Profit called The Theodore Madison Foundation (TMF) that empowers the youth to get physically active through sport and recreation. TMF is operated by James Madison University Alumni and was founded by baseball teammates and classmates.

  • Steve Weihe (he/him) - Recycling Specialist & Co-Founder

    Steve is a Recycling Specialist at the County of San Diego’s Solid Waste Planning & Recycling Section. His duties include public education and outreach, contract management, social media as well as answering inquiries from the public. Previously, Steve worked in the Environmental Services Department at the City of San Diego where he helped create recycling-related signage for City waste and recycling trucks, set up a recycling program for illegally-dumped mattresses at the Miramar Landfill and worked with Goodwill to install a donation bin at ESD’s headquarters in Kearny Mesa. Steve holds a Bachelor’s Degree from APUS in Environmental Science, is a certified Master Composter and TRUE Zero Waste Advisor.

    When not at work, Steve enjoys spending time with his family, playing sports, hiking, traveling and creating his own compost at home in Ramona.

  • Tom Kiely (he/him) - President Emeritus & Co-Founder

    Tom is the departing General Manager of Thorn Brewing Company Barrio Logan, a departing Director for the San Diego Brewers Guild and the departing Slow Beer Chair of Slow Food Urban San Diego. He has worked in the beer industry for fifteen years and has been a part of the San Diego Brewcycling Collaborative since its inception. He came to San Diego by way of Whitman, MA (home of the first chocolate chip cookie) and after 10 years of living in California he decided to move back to the Boston area in September of 2022.  

    Though Tom went back to his Bostonian roots, he will forever be our Captain and core Brewcycler! Thanks to Tom, this whole amazing movement finally geared up, and we will always be grateful to him for bringing us together and get this initiative moving!
